America is falling back in love with hybrids. China’s EV boom is cooling off after years of explosive growth. Europe, meanwhile, is doing something almost nobody predicted a year ago: accelerating its EV transition, hard.

EVs Just Crossed a Quarter of the Market

More than 1.24 million fully electric cars were sold across Europe in the first half of 2026 — a 33.7% jump over the same period last year. June was an even bigger standout: EV registrations across 17 European markets rose 39.5% year-over-year to 275,060 cars, pushing EVs to 25.6% of all new car sales that month — for the first time, over one in four new cars sold in Europe was fully electric.

Zooming out to the full continent (EU, EFTA, and UK combined), battery-electric car sales for the first half rose 35.1% to 1,608,200 units, with the EU alone posting an even stronger 40.5% increase to 1,220,890 units. The overall BEV share across Europe climbed to 22.2%, with the EU specifically at 20.7%.

The Big Three, and a Fast-Rising Fourth

Germany, Britain, and France remain Europe’s largest EV markets, but the growth story looks different in each. Germany and the UK now see roughly a quarter of all new car sales go electric, while France’s EV expansion has actually been moving even faster than either of them.

Italy is the market to watch for sheer growth rate: EV sales there jumped 77.7% in the first half, though volumes and market share — still around 8.5% — remain well behind the big three. Spain’s EV share is similarly modest for now, but industry watchers expect it to climb through the rest of the year as new incentive programs take effect.

Not every market is rising, though. The Netherlands was the only European country where electric car sales actually declined in the first half — down 0.1% — though that dip was still milder than the broader 4.2% drop in the country’s total car sales. And Norway, as usual, remains in a league of its own: BEVs now account for a remarkable 98% share of all new car sales there.

Why Europe Is Bucking the Global Trend

Some of this momentum traces back to regulation. On December 16, 2025, the European Commission unveiled its Automotive Package, introducing a revised CO2 reduction pathway and compliance framework running through the 2030–2035 period. That regulatory pressure is doing exactly what it was designed to do: EU carmakers are racing to hit binding CO2 targets, and BEVs are the primary lever they have to pull.

Separately, EU battery-electric vehicle sales reached 19% market share in 2025, and analysts now expect regulatory targets to push that figure to 23% in 2026 and 28% in 2027. Notably, carmakers representing half the market have already hit their 2025–2027 compliance targets, with the rest expected to follow.

Prices Are Finally Coming Down — Slowly

One of the biggest historical barriers to EV adoption — price — is starting to ease. BEV prices fell 4% in 2025, or roughly €1,800 on average, driven largely by the arrival of more affordable models. That said, full price parity with gasoline cars is still some way off, since automakers continue to concentrate their EV lineups in larger segments and SUVs, which keeps average prices above pre-pandemic 2020 levels.

Chinese Brands Are Making Real Inroads

Europe’s EV boom isn’t just a win for European automakers — it’s increasingly a global competition playing out on European soil. Chinese brands are expanding rapidly across the continent, with BYD emerging as a standout: it ranked as Europe’s fourth best-selling EV brand in the first quarter of 2026 alone. Some newer Chinese entrants are still finding their footing in unfamiliar markets, but others are already putting real pressure on established European and global players.

The Longer-Term Forecast Is More Cautious

Despite the EV momentum, the broader light-vehicle market in Europe isn’t exactly booming. EV Volumes now forecasts Western and Central European light-vehicle sales will grow just 2.6% year-on-year in 2026 — an upward revision from an earlier estimate of only 0.1% growth, but still modest. At roughly 15.5 million units, that’s still well below the 18 million light vehicles registered back in 2019, and volumes aren’t expected to return to that pre-pandemic level anytime within the current forecast horizon, which stretches to 2040.

Looking further out, Spain is forecast to reach a 22.1% EV market share this year, with a longer trajectory toward 40.1% by 2030 and 90.3% of new light-vehicle sales by 2040 across major markets — a reminder that even with today’s momentum, Europe’s full EV transition is still a decade-plus project.

The Bottom Line

While hybrids reclaim ground in America and China’s EV market takes a breather, Europe is running its own playbook — driven less by consumer enthusiasm alone and more by binding regulatory targets that are forcing automakers’ hands. The result is a market where electric vehicles have gone from a growing niche to a genuine mainstream choice, even as the overall car market grows only slowly and unevenly across the continent. The real test now is whether falling prices and expanding model choice can keep this momentum going once regulatory deadlines stop doing the heavy lifting.

 <div
